Zion Township’s Mission Statement:
“To act as liaison between Zion residents and community
resources to empower and enhance the quality of life.”
The History of Zion Township
The Township system of government is our country’s oldest type of government.
As with all townships in Illinois, Benton Township was established by the people to meet the common needs of residents of often widely scattered home sites more than 150 years ago. Like all good stories, the Township history is filled with well-known local names, ongoing action and a mission. It was on September 10, 1930 that the resolution was adopted, “CREATING A NEW TOWN TO BE KNOWN OF ZION, LAKE COUNTY, IL.” It was in this action, that Zion succeeded from Benton Township, creating one of 20 co-terminus townships out of 1433 total townships in the State of Illinois. That being said, the City of Zion is now also a Township as Zion Township has the same boundaries as the City of Zion.
The township supervisor serves as chief executive officer of the township. The supervisor’s duties and responsibilities include serving as chairman of the township board of trustees, supervisor of the general assistance program and treasurer of all town funds including general assistance.
